Sustainable Practices

Our Goal

At Rancho Valencia, we are proud to offer our guests an escape to an oasis engulfed by nature. It is our responsibility to nurture and better our surrounding environment and community.

Our hope is to continue enhancing our efforts of responsible resource use, waste reduction, and intentional sourcing of products. We would like to help set the sustainability standard for other hotels and resorts like ours.

We are currently in the process of tracking and minimizing our green house gas emissions and being more transparent about our sustainable practices for our guests and our community.

In Our Rooms

Efforts to reduce our single-use plastic waste over the past few years has been a predominant focus for us. We made the conscious decision to move away from plastic water bottles and instead offer our guests a glass carafe of filtered water for their bedside. Bathroom amenities are refillable or have starch packaging instead of being single-use. When guests choose to send their clothes to be laundered, they will find their items returned to them in a reusable cloth garment bag.

Digital magazines and newspapers provide an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper formats. We have also implemented energy-saving fixtures to ensure that we operate at the highest efficiency possible.

Our complimentary mini-bar features products from local companies such as Calicorn Popcorn, San Diego Bar nutritional bars, and Dallmann Fine Chocolates.

At Our Spa

From the organic local bites prepared in-house to the biodegradable slippers available at your leisure, our spa experience has also been crafted with sustainability in mind.

Organic products that utilize sustainable harvesting practices are featured in our boutique and our treatments. Natural essential oils and a suite of curated organic products, including the ISUN skin care line, are at the heart of our holistic philosophy.

Within Our Restaurant

Sourcing locally where it makes sense, is central to our mission at Rancho Valencia. San Diego has the largest number of privately owned farms of any county in the US and we see it as our responsibility to support them.

Situated within one of the 7 mediterranean climates around the globe, we are fortunate to enjoy extended growing seasons and a wide variety of sun drenched produce year round. We know many of our farmers, fishermen and ranchers by name, choosing to buy directly from them when we can.

In addition, our culinary garden on property, is exclusively organic. Once produce is harvested, it is delivered straight to our kitchen. Vermicomposting has been implemented to create nutritious fertilizer from kitchen scraps to put back into our soil.

Around Our Property

Quench water filtration stations are conveniently located throughout our property for our guests. In lieu of single-use plastic, reusable water bottles are placed in each room upon arrival and guests are encouraged to refill their bottles throughout their stay.

Nestled among our olive groves, bee boxes give a safe home to pollinators that are vital for our ecosystem. In the event we have a wild hive form, a local apiarist carefully and humanely relocates the bees.

Beyond Our Resort

We are proud to partner with ProduceGood, a local organic upcycling organization that contributes their annual collection to San Diego County’s charitable food supply to fight hunger in our local community. Each year, we host a property-wide gleaning day where we harvest the fruit from our citrus groves and donate them to Produce Good’s efforts.

As a tennis-forward resort, we are conscious of our continuous equipment purchasing and use. RecycleBalls is a non-profit organization that transforms old tennis balls into a variety of green products including playground surfaces, stucco replacement, and even new tennis courts!

Our spa contributes monthly donations of worn towels and sheets that are given to our neighboring animal shelter, Helen Woodward , a no-kill facility that provides educational and therapeutic programs for people, and humane care and adoption for animals.
